The World's Greatest Earthmover to Embark on Coast-to-Coast Fundraising “Road Trip” in Partnership with the American Red Cross

3,000-Mile Charity Drive Aims to Raise $1 Million for the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 15, 2010) – In response to the ongoing needs in Haiti, JCB, one of the word’s largest manufacturers of construction equipment, today announced its Backhoe Across America charity drive, a national initiative in partnership with the American Red Cross. The cross-country campaign features a JCB 3CX backhoe loader, which will travel from Georgia to California to help raise the still-needed funds that will be critical to Haiti’s long-term rebuilding efforts.

Dates and Locations

With a fundraising goal of $1 million, JCB will donate all monies raised during the 26-day road trip directly to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund. Those who wish to make a donation to the Backhoe Across America charity drive can either visit one of the 11 route stops or go to www.JCBforHaiti.com.

No Ordinary Road Trip
The JCB 3CX backhoe loader will begin its coast-to-coast trek from the beach at Tybee Island, Ga., on Friday, March 26, 2010. The backhoe then will travel more than 3,000 miles across the U.S., making fundraising “pit stops” at JCB dealerships in nine cities along the way, before reaching its final destination – the beach at California’s Santa Monica Pier – on April 20, 2010.

“Haiti’s road to recovery will be long and difficult,” said John Patterson, chairman and CEO, JCB Inc. “On behalf of everyone at JCB, we hope that the miles traveled and donations secured during Backhoe Across America will help ease the burden of the journey that lies ahead for this devastated nation.”

No Ordinary Backhoe
On a recent episode of the National Geographic and Discovery Channel show, ‘Greatest Ever’, the JCB backhoe was ranked number-one on a list of the “Greatest Ever Earthmovers.” With the Backhoe Across America campaign, JCB will put the Worlds Greatest Earthmover to an even greater test to see just how far a bucketful of charity can go to help the Haitian people rebuild their lives.

JCB invented the backhoe loader in 1953; today, the company is the world’s leading manufacturer of this versatile and reliable job-site solution, producing almost one out of every two backhoes sold worldwide. In keeping with the company’s long tradition of assisting disaster-relief efforts around the world, JCB already has donated two backhoe loaders in response to Haiti’s immediate recovery needs. And, most recently, JCB pledged to provide $100,000 worth of backhoe equipment for Chile’s earthquake victims.

No Ordinary Driver
JCB veteran employee Neil Smith will be the man behind the wheel as the backhoe makes its way across America. When Neil was growing up in Rocester, England, he walked by a large factory on his way to school each and every day. That factory was JCB’s World Headquarters. Not surprisingly, Neil dreamed of operating JCB’s signature bright yellow machines – but he had no way of knowing that the family-owned manufacturer would play a major role in his life for many years to come.

Now in his 37th year with JCB, Neil will operate the 3CX machine from start to finish, traveling at speeds up to 30 mph on secondary roads, which, by law, must be used throughout the trek due to the backhoe’s maximum speed limitations.

JCB Launches New 515-40 Compact Telescopic Handler

Newest and most compact telehandler offers maneuverability, lifting height and power for smaller worksites

Leading heavy equipment manufacturer JCB is launching the most compact and maneuverable telescopic handler model the company has produced to date. This machine, the new JCB 515-40, is the result of an innovative design that keeps the machine’s overall height under six feet, making it perfect for use in more confined areas.

Small but mighty, the 515-40  is just 5’ 11” tall, 5’ 2” wide and 9’ 6” long and weighs 7,672 lbs. To achieve the lowest possible overall height, JCB challenged conventional design concepts and developed the 515-40 with an all-new, innovative, off-set single-spine main frame. As a result, the machine boasts a full-size cab with both easy accessibility and plenty of space for the operator. The new design enables the machine to break through a barrier that previously prevented many compact telescopic handlers from use in smaller workspaces. According to Chris Giorgianni, general manager of product marketing at JCB North America’s headquarters in Savannah, Ga., the extremely compact 515-40 can be effectively used at sites that could previously only be accessed by skid steer loaders.

515-40 can be effectively used at sites that could previously only be accessed by skid steer loaders.

“Our new 515-40 is small enough to provide the construction, agricultural and industrial markets with the many benefits offered by our telescopic handler range,” Giorgianni said. “This machine brings the maneuverability and power of the telescopic handler to nurseries, small farms, landscape contractors, building supply yards, warehouses and many other applications that can benefit from its 8’ 6” of forward reach and 13’ 2” of loading height.”

With a turning radius of just nine feet and very compact dimensions, the JCB 515-40 can maneuver in even the smallest work environments. Equipped with 4-wheel steering, 4-wheel drive, a hydrostatic transmission and exceptional ground clearance, the machine can easily traverse the challenging outdoor conditions often found at a landscaping job site or on the farm. Its 4-wheel drive system and hydrostatic transmission are designed to get the most power to each wheel. This is achieved by mounting the four drive motors in the axle hub, ensuring the power is exactly where the operator needs it. The drive train design ensures that the 515-40 is at home on the yard or running off-road in wet conditions.

515-40 can carry a hefty payload of 3,300 pounds up to a maximum lift height of 13’ 2”.

Powered by a 50 hp engine, the 515-40 can carry a hefty payload of 3,300 pounds up to a maximum lift height of 13’ 2”. This combination of features allows the JCB 515-40 to maximize storage space inside small buildings, enables it to load a truck from one side and even grants it access to the inside of a standard container to load it from one end.

“The 515-40 comes standard with a universal skid steer quick attach, opening it up to a vast range of attachments,” Giorgianni added. “This extra functionality combined with ease of operation makes the machine an ideal multi-tasker for any number of applications.”

515-40 may be small in stature, its unique, compact design does not skimp on operator comfort or safety.

While the 515-40 may be small in stature, its unique, compact design does not skimp on operator comfort or safety. The machine boasts a full-size canopy or an optional cab. When outfitted with a cab, the 515-40 also offers optional air conditioning and a deluxe suspension seat. Low noise level and both ROPS and FOPS protection provide additional health and safety benefits. Access to the cab is made easy by a low-level step and flat cab floor, ensuring easy entry and exit for the driver.

The development of the new 515-40 compact telescopic handler is yet another example of the JCB’s continued dedication to helping its customers get the job done. JCB Expands Its Fastrac 7000 Series Tractor Range With Powerful New 7270 Model

JCB is building upon its early success with the Fastrac 7000 Series tractors by expanding the range with the addition of a new model that offers even more power than its predecessors. The new Fastrac 7270 will be officially unveiled at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky, February 10-13, 2010. According to JCB’s agriculture product manager, Ray Bingley, the 7270’s performance will provide farmers and other operators with a higher level of productivity.

“The Fastrac 7270 offers all the features and benefits of the 7000 Series range,” Bingley explained. “However, the 7270 is powered by a 6.7-litre Cummins six-cylinder engine for extra power and torque, with a maximum power output of 270hp.”

With the addition of the 7270, the 7000 Series range of Fastrac tractors provides a complete generation of advanced and highly productive power units for farmers and contractors.  All tractors in the 7000 Series include full all-round, self-leveling suspension that allows safe and speedy operation up to an incredible 43 miles per hour between fields while providing the industry’s finest ride comfort and excellent traction. In addition to the innovative self-leveling rear suspension, which maintains a set ride height regardless of load, there is a similar system for the front axle. Ride-height sensors trigger a response to quickly pump up or soften the suspension whenever the load changes. The tractors maintain full suspension travel at all times, preventing front-end lift when carrying a heavy implement on the rear linkage and nose-lowering when lifting heavy front implements. An all-new chassis supports this advanced suspension set-up, along with the bigger capacity rear axle and 20,000-lb rear and optional 7,700-lb front implement linkage systems.

A four-range, six-speed powershift transmission gives the tractors a fingertip-controlled power shuttle, with 24 forward speeds and nine reverse speeds. A touch screen monitor allows different operating modes to be selected, such as a fully automatic dynamic-shifting for road use, where the transmission will go up and down the gears according to changes in engine loads. Alternatively, the operator can manually shift up and down gears with the seat-mounted joystick.

While the 7000 Series Fastrac tractors certainly offer the ultimate in performance, they also provide unmatched operator comfort. An all-new, JCB-designed, engineered and constructed cab features a full-size seat for passengers installed alongside the luxurious, air-suspension driver’s seat. The driver’s seat has a four-post structure, giving operators first-rate visibility in all directions and allowing them to keep a close eye on implements and obstructions. The large glass area, uninterrupted by side pillars, also creates a light and airy environment with greater visibility for enhanced overall safety.

Fastrac cabs include high-volume ventilation with fully automatic climate control to increase operator comfort and minimize fatigue during long hours spent at the fully-adjustable steering wheel. Seat-mounted controls and a touch-screen information and control monitor help the driver make best use of the tractor’s productive features. Digital and analog displays provide at-a-glance updates of essential operating information on a new slim line instrument panel. On the armrest, operators can enjoy some of today’s essential high-tech fixtures and fittings, such as an MP3 player connection and a mobile phone charge point.

“When JCB designed the Fastrac, we didn’t just improve upon the farm tractor, dull suspension for the best possible efficiency and speed in the field. We remain committed to providing the most innovative and highest performance tractors available onwe rethought it completely,” Bingley added. “The JCB Fastrac is still the only farm tractor with a f the market today.”

The development of the new 7270 Fastrac and the enhancements to the entire Fastrac 7000 Series range of tractors demonstrate JCB’s continued dedication to helping customers get the job done. JCB Donates $150,000 Worth Of Equipment To Haiti Quake Disaster

JCB's Donated backhoe loaders prepare to leave for Haiti

JCB, the world’s third largest manufacturer of construction equipment, is donating equipment worth $150,000 to help the disaster relief effort in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that is feared to have killed tens of thousands of people.

The gift of two 3CX backhoe loaders is being made by JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford in response to an appeal from relief agencies for foreign aid.

Sir Anthony Bamford said: “The scale of the devastation is unimaginable and it’s heart-rending to see the human suffering caused by the disaster. There is clearly a lack of equipment on the island and I hope our gift of JCB machines will help in some small way to alleviate that suffering and in the rebuilding in the aftermath of the earthquake.”

The machines are being made available to the US Government and its aid agencies, which are taking a leading role in the relief effort on the Caribbean island. The earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale, has damaged the port and has created a number of logistical challenges hindering supplies entering the nation.

John Patterson, Chairman and CEO of JCB Inc., says, “We are working with the State Department with the help of the Georgia delegation and their staff on the Hill. We want utilize the most efficient channels available to ensure that the machines reach the agencies and the people that need them. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti.”

The contribution to the aid effort follows a series of other JCB machinery donations in recent years to other parts of the world hit by natural disasters, including the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan province in China, when six backhoe loaders worth over $600,000 and a team of operators were sent from the company’s factory in Shanghai to help the clear-up effort in the region.

JCB also donated machines worth more than $2 million to help in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami in 2004, with JCB diggers deployed to Thailand, southern India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Last year the company donated an excavator and a backhoe loader worth $250,000 to help the disaster relief effort in the city of Padang following the devastating earthquake that struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

JCB HMEE’s Are The Newest Recruits Of The Royal New Zealand Army

Brand New HMEE's waiting to be shipped to New Zealand.

JCB HMEE’s are the newest recruits of the Royal New Zealand Army. Six green HMEE’s recently rolled down the Savannah line to fulfill an order placed by the Royal New Zealand Army. The machines represent the first HMEE’s ordered by the NZ Army and as such, the nation sent three officials to inspect and receive the machines.

Major Theo Alexopoulos, an officer in the Logistics regiment, was chosen by the NZ Army as project manager in charge of securing and introducing the HMEE to the New Zealand forces. Major Alexopoulos had not seen a HMEE prior to his trip to Savannah but was familiar with JCB’s world leading 4CX. The NZ Army currently uses the military version of the 4CX and they have been very happy with the performance. Hearing of all the increased capabilities the HMEE offers, the group was excited to experience the machine first hand. “The HMEE gives us a huge range of options that we didn’t have before. The combination of the crew protection and the speed will enable us to keep up with our striker company group, which is something we have never been able to do”, says Alexopoulos.

John Webb, Major Theo Alexopoulos, and WOI Bruce Allen

The group was very impressed with their new machines, but felt there was one thing missing. Major Alexopoulos asked if JCB would be able to customize the machines and make them distinctive to New Zealand. JCB was happy to comply and tattooed Kiwis on the hoods of the 6 machines.

“JCB is a world class organization. I came here with a good impression of JCB and after meeting with the team and seeing the operation in action, I have even greater respect for JCB,” says Major Alexopoulos. The green HMEEs emblazoned with Kiwis are scheduled to deploy down-under in January.
