CBE HONOR FOR JCB’S DEPUTY CHAIRMAN JOHN PATTERSON

John Patterson, Deputy Chairman of JCB, has been appointed as a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List. The honor has been awarded to Mr Patterson in recognition of his services to British business development worldwide.

John Patterson, Deputy Chairman of JCB, awarded CBE Honors

Patterson said, “I am extremely humbled by this announcement. I am very proud to receive the honor and all that it represents. This is a tribute to the many people within the JCB worldwide organization, especially Sir Anthony Bamford. I would not have been able to achieve this without his faith in me and his leadership, guidance and wisdom.”

Patterson joined JCB in 1971 as a field service engineer and rose to Worldwide CEO overseeing global operations for the world’s largest privately owned construction equipment company.  With offices on four continents, Patterson has travelled extensively to build JCB’s global expansion.  Under the last 5 years of his worldwide leadership, retail sales increased by 98 percent and revenue increased by 107 percent.  In the last ten years, Patterson has opened new manufacturing facilities in Savannah, Georgia; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Pune, India; Shanghai, China; and acquired operations in Germany.

With Patterson at the helm, JCB’s global market share rose to 12 percent, JCB earned and maintained the number one market share position for backhoe loaders and telescopic handlers globally and JCB upheld its position as the world’s 3rd largest construction equipment manufacturer by volume.

JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford said: “John’s contribution to both JCB and British business over the past 40 years has been immense and I am delighted that he has received this well-deserved recognition.”

His dedication to the industry extends beyond his role at JCB. In 2007 Patterson was elected to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ (AEM) board of directors.   AEM is the international trade and business development resource for companies that manufacture equipment, products and services used worldwide in the construction, agricultural, mining, forestry, and utility fields. He is a member of the Georgia Institute of Technology Advisory Board in Atlanta as well as Chairman of the Savannah affiliate board.  He is a former president of the Federation of Manufacturers of Construction Equipment and Cranes (FMCEC).

Honors Lists are published twice a year at New Year and in mid-June on the date of The Queen’s official birthday.  All honorees have been through a rigorous selection process overseen by Cabinet Office committees before their name is recommended to The Queen by the Prime Minister to be included in the Honors List.  Patterson will receive the Honor at Buckingham Palace later in the year.

JCB WELCOMES GEORGIA GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL TO ITS WORLD HEADQUARTERS

Visit builds relationships and creates a solid foundation for future growth in Georgia

Leading heavy equipment manufacturer JCB welcomed Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to its World Headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire, England on Tuesday the 17th of May. The governor was accompanied by Chris Cummiskey, commissioner, and Gretchen Corbin, deputy commissioner, both of Georgia’s Department of Economic Development. The visit to JCB is one stop on the Governor’s nearly two-week-long economic development trip to Europe.

Following their arrival at JCB World Headquarters, Governor Deal and his staff took a tour of the facility, seeing firsthand where the world’s best-selling backhoes and Loadall telescopic handlers are produced. Upon the tour’s conclusion, the governor enjoyed a working lunch with John Patterson and Sir Anthony Bamford, chairman of JCB worldwide. The three discussed JCB’s continued potential for growth in Georgia, including JCB’s plans to add 200 more jobs in Savannah in the near future.

“JCB has contributed and continues to contribute a great deal to the city of Savannah and the entire state of Georgia,” Governor Deal said. “To have a global organization like JCB locate its North American Headquarters in Georgia says so much about our state’s many strengths—its prime location, its dedicated workforce and its growing economy, just to name a few. I enjoyed meeting with JCB’s executives, learning more about the company’s future plans and developing sound relationships that will serve us well in the months and years ahead.”

JCB DONATES THE USE OF EQUIPMENT TO ASSIST GEORGIA AND ALABAMA CLEAN-UP EFFORTS

Heavy equipment manufacturer provides skid steers and backhoe loaders to clear debris and begin the recovery process.

Leading heavy equipment manufacturer JCB has donated the use of various machines to assist with clean-up efforts in Georgia and Alabama following the violent storms that rocked the region on April 27, 2011. According to JCB North America Chairman and CEO John Patterson, the company’s latest donations reflect its ongoing support of disaster relief efforts worldwide.

“As a global organization, JCB has assisted with relief efforts in a number of countries over the years,” Patterson said. “The residents of Georgia and Alabama are JCB’s neighbors here in the United States, and upon learning of the devastation left behind by the recent storms, we knew that we wanted to help them in any way we could.”

In these situations, the type of equipment that JCB manufactures is necessary to clear tree and building debris from roads and driveways so that recovery and rescue efforts can take place. After hearing of the widespread damage throughout the Deep South, JCB employees in Savannah and dealers in Georgia and Alabama devised plans to donate the use of heavy equipment to launch the long recovery process in the areas hardest hit by the powerful storms.

JCB’s Savannah Employees Step Up

Spencer Howard, a member of JCB’s demonstration crew based at the North American Headquarters in Savannah, Ga., came up with the idea to take a JCB New Generation 280 skid steer loader with fork, bucket and grapple attachments to Ringgold and begin clearing roadways. Howard ran the idea past Neil Smith, JCB’s events and demonstration manager, who fully agreed with his plan.

JCB demonstrator Spencer Howard uses a New Generation 280 skid steer to clear debris in Ringgold, GA

Howard became part of a volunteer crew that worked from daylight to dark, Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1, using the JCB 280 skid steer’s speed and maneuverability to clear as much debris as possible. “I have family in that area, and I felt like it was my responsibility to help out,” Howard said. “We saw houses torn from their slabs, an entire golf course development where none of the homes remained. The devastation, what those people are experiencing right now, was unbelievable. When I had to leave, people I didn’t even know hugged and thanked me. That made the entire trip worthwhile.”

JCB of Alabama Lends a Helping Hand

Peter Cunningham, JCB’s district manager in Alabama and Florida, knew that it was important for JCB to step up in this time of crisis.  Together with Mark Long, president and owner of JCB of Alabama, the two were able to secure a 3CX backhoe loader from JCB’s Savannah headquarters to assist in the Alabama relief efforts.

A donated JCB 3CX backhoe loader works to clear roads in Alabama following the tornados that ripped through the Southeast

The 3CX’s front end loader is perfect for debris collection, while the reach of its excavator end allows the unit to be used to extend over debris piles. The dealership received the backhoe on May 10, and municipal workers in surrounding communities will use it to continue clearing debris.

“We wanted to get machines where they were needed most,” Cunningham said.  “By working with JCB of Alabama, we were able to immediately provide the use of a 3CX to the City of Dora for its recovery and clean-up process.”

Long knew that his dealership would step up in this time of crisis. “In our line of work, it’s normal for us to receive calls for assistance when natural disasters take place,” Long explained. “As a company, we try to use whatever equipment we have in our yard to help out as quickly as possible. We were extremely grateful that JCB came to us with the idea of donating the use of a 3CX, because the more machines that we can offer to the local municipalities, the faster we can help the residents of those areas recover from this disaster.”

In addition to the City of Dora, JCB of Alabama donated the use of its equipment to the communities of Fultondale and Hueytown. “While it’s very important for the larger metropolitan areas like Birmingham to receive assistance, we also wanted to ensure that smaller towns and cities are getting the help they need.”

JCB of Georgia Partners with Ringgold Area Contractor

A dealership located right next door to JCB’s North American Headquarters in Savannah, JCB of Georgia also expressed its desire to help the victims of these violent storms. “We knew we wanted to donate the use of a machine, but we needed to find a contractor who was willing to volunteer his time to operate it,” said Natalia Welch, marketing manager for JCB of Georgia. “That’s when we contacted David Mills.”

David Mills owns and operates David Mills Construction in Ringgold, Ga., building new homes and remodeling existing ones. “I’ve purchased three backhoes from JCB in the past, so they know me,” Mills said. “When they contacted me about relief efforts, I’d been using my own equipment to try and help out, but the use of the donated 3CX backhoe has helped us remove even more debris in less time.”

Mills will use the 3CX from JCB of Georgia to clean up and separate tree debris from building scrap material—a long and arduous process. “The people here in Ringgold are my friends and neighbors, and they simply need my help,” Mills said. “They need to be able to get to their home sites and salvage what’s left, and clearing debris is the least that I can do for them.”

A Global Company with a Global Perspective

JCB’s equipment donations in Georgia and Alabama are the latest in the company’s long history of philanthropic endeavors. In 2010, JCB sponsored the “Backhoe Across America” charity drive in an effort to raise funds for Haiti following its devastating earthquakes. That same year, JCB donated $150,000 worth of equipment to Haiti for clean-up and relief efforts. Also in 2010, JCB pledged assistance worth over $100,000 for rebuilding efforts in Chile after its disastrous earthquakes. Other past donations include the gifting of six backhoe loaders and a team of operators following the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province in China. JCB also donated machines worth more than £1 million to help in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami in 2004, with JCB diggers deployed to Thailand, southern India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

“Our global presence makes us acutely aware of the need to support our partners, friends and neighbors, wherever they may be,” Patterson explained. “It’s our hope that these donations will continue to make a positive impact upon the lives of those people who have been affected by these natural disasters.”

JCB UNVEILS NEW FASTRAC 3230 XTRA

JCB displays the new machine for the first time in North America at the National Farm Machinery Show

LOUISVILLE, KY (February 16, 2010)- This week at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, KY, JCB is introducing North America to the newly-designed 3230 Fastrac Xtra. First launched to the European market last June, this new model retains the outstanding performance and features of the previous Fastrac 3230 model that it replaces – class-leading full suspension, ultimate braking and safety, high road speeds, equal weight distribution, systems capability and a well-proportioned cab. Now, the 3230 Xtra incorporates a host of new features designed to meet the needs of the modern operator and maximize the machine’s potential, both in the field and on the road.

The new JCB Fastrac 3230 Xtra

The 3230 Xtra includes a wide range of essential new features:

  • P-TRONIC transmission with cruise control provides effortless and automatic gear shifting
  • Xtra-Drive functionality offers stress-free, clutch-less driving
  • New cab layout creates an enhanced operating environment
  • More torque improves in-field and on-road performance
  • Transport power boost provides increased pulling power at speed
  • Variable flow hydraulics generate faster flow rates and lower fuel consumption
  • Headland management option presents effortless control in the field
  • Xenon worklight option generates near-daylight working conditions at night
  • Quick-coupler layout makes air brake connection easier
  • Updated air conditioning system improves air flow and simplifies control
  • New front hood styling offers a more modern look

P-TRONIC Transmission

The new 3230 Xtra comes standard with the 24-speed P-TRONIC power-shift transmission already offered in the Fastrac 7000 Series. With this transmission, operators can simply move the joystick for clutch-less gear and range changes between the six gears in each of the four ranges. Directional changes can be performed just as easily by using the same seat-mounted joystick or the optional left-hand column lever.

The P-TRONIC Transmission also offers the same flexibility and automation as the 7000 Series. In drive mode, the tractor shifts like an automatic car for speedy operation on the road. Similarly, a cruise control option allows the operator to easily set and resume an optimum forward speed.  Autoshift mode is also available, enabling the tractor to automatically shift gears in the field based on the engine load and within parameters pre-set by the operator.

Xtra-Drive

The new JCB Fastrac 3230 Xtra also features Xtra-Drive as standard. This innovative new feature makes it possible to drive the machine by just using the brake pedal. Like a vehicle with an automatic transmission, there is no need to use the clutch, which is perfect for those tricky road junctions or regular headland turns. When the operator is hitching the 3230 Xtra up to implements, the tractor’s clutch pedal overrides Xtra-Drive to retain perfect inching capabilities.

Cab Interior

The cab interior now features the same armrest as the 7000 and 8000 series, placing all the tractor’s functions at the operator’s fingertips. The joystick holds the controls for effortless direction and speed changes, as well as easy activation of the headland turn assist, the drive mode selection and the four pre-programmable function buttons.

To safely and productively operate any tractor, operators must be able to clearly view the surrounding terrain. That’s why the new 3230 Xtra has been designed to provide operators with the maximum level of visibility. The new compact right-hand console retains a low profile, while still keeping the new adjustable color touch screen for tractor setup and current work modes close at hand. With this touch screen, operators can easily alter and adjust all of the tractor’s parameters for optimum performance.

Engine Performance

JCB has increased the 3230 Xtra’s engine torque by up to 22 percent, giving the machine far more pulling power for top performance in heavy field-work applications.

A standard user-selectable power boost feature is controlled by an illuminated button on the armrest, allowing operators to choose between power and economy modes. When active, the power boost feature boosts the 3230 Xtra up to 270hp in the top two gears for greater acceleration at higher road speeds and more power when climbing hills.

Hydraulics

The JCB 3230 Xtra features variable flow hydraulics with color-coded precision spool controls mounted on the armrest for ease of operation. This load-sensing system provides flow rates of up to 37 GPM with 26 GPM per slice for the most demanding implements—an increase of more than 25 percent over the previous 3230 model.  Precise and accurate operation of spools is possible through either a programmed joystick button on the armrest controls or a headland management sequence. The piston pump only pumps oil when required for greater economy.

The load-sensing power beyond option is available for implements with their own valve block. With this option, the implement demands oil from the tractor only when required, again improving economy and efficiency.

A priority flow option is also available to replace the flow divider option on previous machines. This provides constant oil flow through the green spool valve to a service regardless of any other hydraulic functions, ideal for uses such as powering a fan on a seed drill.

Headland Management

Headland management is now available as an option on all Fastrac 3000 Series Xtra models as part of the field performance package, which also includes the ground speed radar. The 3230 Xtra uses the same simple and easy-to-use system as the latest 7000 Series Fastracs, allowing you to pre-program up to five different sequences, each containing up to 15 different functions.  These functions can be linked together to provide an instant reaction or a delayed reaction based on a preset distance or time. This results in a true “one press” solution to headland maneuvers.

Xenon Worklight Option

The xenon worklight package option on the 7000 Series Fastracs has been so popular that JCB is now introducing the same package on its new 3230 Xtra machines. These lights cast a brilliant pool of illumination that’s almost as bright as natural daylight, allowing operators to clearly see their work areas and safely maintain desired forward speeds without compromising their quality of work.

The new JCB Fastrac 3230 Xtra went into full production in September 2010. This machine’s development demonstrates JCB’s continued dedication to helping customers get the job done. To learn more about the new JCB Fastrac 3230 Xtra and the entire Fastrac range, visit www.FastracXtra.com.

JCB WINS MAJOR ORDER FROM SWEDISH MILITARY FOR HIGH-SPEED MACHINES

JCB has won a multi-million dollar order for its Savannah built high-speed military backhoe from the Swedish Army.

The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (“FMV”) is procuring on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces 10 High Mobility Engineer Excavators (HMEEs), which will be delivered by the end of next year in readiness to go into service in 2012. The units are currently in production at JCB’s Savannah facility.

The JCB HMEE is a high speed military backhoe produced in Savannah, GA

The deal signals another major success for the unique machine which went into production at JCB’s Savannah factory when, in 2005, the company won its largest ever military order  – worth a total of $230 million  – for up to 800 HMEEs from the United States Army.

John Patterson, Chairman and CEO of JCB Inc. says: “The HMEE is already in use for a number of armed forces around the world, including those in the US and the UK, so we’re delighted to have won another substantial order for this unique machine, which is exclusively manufactured here in Savannah. A number of other nations are also expressing strong interest in the HMEE so we are confident we will win more business in the future.”

In 2008, the British Army placed a $10.5 million order for HMEEs, which are now in service in Afghanistan.

Full production of HMEEs began in 2007 at JCB Inc in Savannah, Georgia. The machine combines the capabilities of the world-renowned JCB backhoe loader and the innovative high-speed JCB Fastrac agricultural tractor, which is the only tractor to have full suspension and anti-lock brakes. The objective of the HMEE concept is to have a machine capable of traveling at military convoy speed without the need for transportation by a truck and low-loader trailer. The top speed of the HMEE is 60mph (88kph).

The 17.5-ton machine has a 6.7- liter diesel engine, four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer, lift more than two tons and dig to a depth of almost thirteen feet. It is designed to be air-transportable by Hercules C-130 aircraft. Added to this, a theater proven crew protection package makes the HMEE a new force within military engineering.

Over almost 30 years, JCB has supplied 45 different military organizations across the world with more than 3400 JCB machines.

JCB LAUNCHES NEW GENERATION SKID STEERS AND TRACK LOADERS

First JCB products to be designed, engineered and manufactured in North America

SAVANNAH, GA. (November 8, 2010)—JCB, one of the world’s largest heavy equipment manufacturers, has launched an exciting new line of highly productive and reliable skid steer loaders and compact track loaders. These “New Generation” machines are the first to not only be manufactured but also designed and engineered at the company’s North American headquarters in Savannah, Ga.

JCB Lanches 7 new models of skid steer and compact track loaders

John Patterson Deputy Chairman of JCB said: “North America generates 60 percent of the worldwide demand for skid steers and compact track loaders, so developing and producing the new generation of machines in Savannah makes perfect sense and has enabled us not only to meet the unique needs of the North American market but also develop a machine range that will have universal appeal.”

Today, JCB introduces a range of seven new skid steers- four wheeled and three tracked- in a range that will eventually grow to 18 models. All seven machines introduced today are vertical lift, which allows for increased capacity and more reach at maximum lift height. The models now available—the 260, 280, 300 and 330 wheeled skid steers and 260T, 300T, 320T compact track loaders—are large platform machines with rated operating capacities (ROC) of 2,600 lbs and above. With the introduction of the New Generation machines, JCB will be able to offer a complete range of wheeled and tracked machines, both radial and vertical lift, ranging from 1300lbs- 3500lbs.

The new generation machines benefit from a number of new features, including:

  • A tilting cab with increased service access
  • Multifunction joysticks
  • A hydraulic quick hitch
  • Isolated cab that is sealed and pressurized with reduced noise levels
  • Heated air-suspension seat with adjustable armrests
  • O-ring face seals for all hydraulic connections
  • A new range of more than 30 types of JCB attachments.

By combining JCB’s history of innovation with a number of additional enhancements, the New Generation machines offer an even wider range of benefits than the company’s previous skid steer and compact track loader product line:

o   Best-in-class visibility. The new vertical lift machines showcase JCB’s unique “PowerBoom” design, which uses a single arm, rather than the conventional two arm skid steer design. The JCB models do not require a torque tube across the back of the machine. Thus, operators can enjoy an unobstructed rear view and better all around visibility for unmatched job site safety and driver confidence. To further enhance visibility JCB has eliminated the mesh screen on the cab machines and replaced it with laminated glass.

o   Best-in-class serviceability. With O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings and a simplified design resulting in 38 percent fewer parts, JCB’s new machines are even easier to service.  A new tilting cab design gives technicians improved access to the machine’s power train and hydraulic components. The new models also feature a rear service door for easy access to the engine and daily checkpoints, a top-opening hood for radiator access and a hinged radiator for improved engine access.

o   Outstanding operator comfort. The new generation machines have a larger entry door and a 17% larger cab than previous models. JCB has also introduced multifunction joystick controls and an optional heated air-suspension seat with adjustable armrests, making JCB’s skid steers incredibly comfortable to operate. Redesigned control panels have been relocated from the lower console to the panels at the top of the cab to be within the operator’s line of sight. Other available creature comforts include cup holders, MP3 player compartment with charging outlet and auxiliary plug, optional stereo package and an electronic throttle.  Operators will also enjoy a quieter cab with noise levels at a very low 76dBa, an 85% improvement.

o   Versatility and performance. Switching to any of the machine’s impressive 30 attachment families is a snap thanks to a standard universal mechanical hitch or an optional hydraulic quick hitch.  Parallel lift and 2-speeds make it easy to maneuver around the job site and complete more tasks in less time, and with the introduction of an optional Smooth Ride System (SRS) transporting materials over rough terrain has been made easier.

o   Unmatched safety. As in previous models, the New Generation skid steers and compact track loaders feature a unique left side entry door that allows the operator to enter and exit the machine clear of the attachment and loader arm, making it the industry’s safest skid steer.

o   Exceptional value. Owning a JCB skid steer or tracked loader costs less due to increased productivity and serviceability. Overall fuel consumption has been reduced 15% equating to an estimated annual savings of more than $3,000 versus competitive machines (based on an off-road diesel price of $2.90).

JCB skid steers feature a unique PowerBoom design based on the same intelligent engineering as JCB’s market leading telescopic handler

“JCB has never shied away from innovation,” Patterson said. “Back in 1993, we introduced the industry’s first single-arm, or ‘monoboom’ skid steer, a safer, more productive machine that was based upon the same engineering principles as a telescopic handler, which also operates with a single boom. What seemed uncommon to others, JCB saw as common sense, and took the intelligent design of telescopic handlers and applied it to skid steer loaders.  Our New Generation skid steers and track loaders embody this same spirit of innovation while taking performance, productivity and safety to an even higher level.”

JCB HOSTS HUBERT MIDDLE SCHOOL’S RISER ACADEMY FOR DAY OF INSPIRATION AND EDUCATION

Group of motivated young men emphasizes the importance of discipline and focus

SAVANNAH, Ga. (May 24, 2010)—The sounds of laughter and learning rang through the halls at Savannah’s very own JCB facility on Wednesday, May 18. The heavy equipment manufacturer hosted 48 young men from Hubert Middle School’s Risers Academy for a day filled with education, inspiration and fun.

Savannah Riser Visit JCB

The Risers Academy is a special initiative of Savannah’s Hubert Middle School that mentors boys from the Hubert neighborhood, helping them both meet and exceed their potential. Young men in the Risers Academy wear a uniform of white shirts with red ties and take special classes with tougher assignments and higher behavioral standards. The program’s name comes from a statement made by Richard Wright, a young African American man who attended school in a converted railroad box car in the mid-1800s. When a Union Army general visited the makeshift classroom, he asked what message he should take back about his experience. Wright stood up and said, “Sir, tell them we are rising.” Wright eventually became the founder and president of Georgia State College (now Savannah State University) and the founder of two Philadelphia banks.

Mike Werner, JCB’s vice president of operations, learned of the Risers Academy through his association with the Savannah School Board’s Educational Fund Committee. This particular committee provides monetary grants to worthy school projects, and Hubert Middle School submitted the Risers Academy as a project for consideration. “Our committee was intrigued by the Risers Academy’s mission, and as a result, I got the chance to visit the school and see what the program is all about,” Werner said. “I left very impressed by the Risers Academy and how it teaches these young men that with hard work and discipline, there’s no limit to what they can achieve.”

Werner invited the Risers Academy to JCB’s North American Headquarters, giving the group an insider’s view into the heavy equipment manufacturer’s daily operations. The boys toured the facility, enjoyed lunch on site, participated in product demonstrations and learned about the importance of branding—not just for businesses and their products, but also on a personal level.

“We discussed how companies like Nike, BMW and McDonald’s, for example, all have logos that evoke certain perceptions from us when we see them,” Werner explained. “Because the Risers Academy has its own logo, I asked the group what that logo meant to them.”

The boys responded with the words “brotherhood,” “focus” and “discipline.” From there, Werner was able to help them understand how the members of the Risers Academy have in essence created their own brand. “I told them that your logo is part of your brand, as is your uniform,” Werner said. “But most importantly, we talked about how the behavior of each and every one of the boys is a part of the Risers Academy’s brand as well. In that way, they came to understand our actions have a profound impact on how we’re perceived.”

Following the branding presentation, the group met JCB employees who have taken distinct paths to their own personal definitions of success, coming from disadvantaged backgrounds or other hardships to achieve high levels of education and career achievement.

“I hope that the time these young men spent at JCB reinforced their dedication to staying the course,” Werner said. “The day’s message was that the process of learning and growing as a person never stops, but it’s up to each of us to keep pushing ourselves and make the most of our opportunities.”
