HMEE Working In Afghanistan

With the globalization of the military theater, the JCB HMEE is designed to meet a variety of transportation requirements, whether it be by land, sea or air. The HMEE has equal weight distribution on all axles which allows it to be transported on a C-130, the turboprop military transport aircraft. Never before has a military construction vehicle met on road regulations and safety standards, allowing the HMEE to travel on civilian roads without the need for a trailer. This unit also meets global rail specifications and has roll-on, roll-off capabilities allowing the HMEE to load itself on and off of a ship. This unmatched transportability means no job site is out of reach for the JCB HMEE.

The all-terrain HMEE is armor-plated for crew protection, has significant towing capacity and most importantly and can maintain “convoy speed”. The HMEE has a life span of 25 years, more than double that of a civilian construction machine, and is capable of achieving more than 60 mph, again more than twice the typical 25 mph top speed of a commercial backhoe. This capability enables the HMEE to keep up with fast-moving military units and provide real-time combat engineering support. The HMEE provides strategic capabilities increasing: mobility — opening up roads; counter-mobility — creating obstacles for the enemy; and, survivability — providing water and supplies, building berms and laying electrical lines.

UPDATE: Donated JCB Backhoes Helping to Rebuild Haiti

Many of you have been asking for an update on the backhoes JCB donated to Haiti following the earthquake in January of this year. The charitable organization that received the backhoes, Food for the Poor, has sent JCB a report and we wanted to share it with you:

Food For the Poor has been working diligently to help the people of Haiti recover from the catastrophic earthquake which struck the country on January 12th. Over the past three months we have ramped up our efforts to distribute relief aid such as food, medical supplies, and building materials as well as our project work to construct sanitation facilities, water supply, and housing.

Your donation of two backhoes has been a true God send to us at this time. To date we have used them to clear rubble, excavate sewage pits, dig out foundations, and reconstruct walls. Without this equipment our response efforts would have been less timely and more costly. Additionally, these backhoes will be extremely useful going forward as are faced with an overwhelming need for housing solutions, school construction, sanitation facilities, and other rebuilding efforts. We also plan to use these backhoes in the construction of sustainable income generating projects such as tilapia farms.

JCB HOSTS HUBERT MIDDLE SCHOOL’S RISER ACADEMY FOR DAY OF INSPIRATION AND EDUCATION

Group of motivated young men emphasizes the importance of discipline and focus

SAVANNAH, Ga. (May 24, 2010)—The sounds of laughter and learning rang through the halls at Savannah’s very own JCB facility on Wednesday, May 18. The heavy equipment manufacturer hosted 48 young men from Hubert Middle School’s Risers Academy for a day filled with education, inspiration and fun.

The Risers Academy is a special initiative of Savannah’s Hubert Middle School that mentors boys from the Hubert neighborhood, helping them both meet and exceed their potential. Young men in the Risers Academy wear a uniform of white shirts with red ties and take special classes with tougher assignments and higher behavioral standards. The program’s name comes from a statement made by Richard Wright, a young African American man who attended school in a converted railroad box car in the mid-1800s. When a Union Army general visited the makeshift classroom, he asked what message he should take back about his experience. Wright stood up and said, “Sir, tell them we are rising.” Wright eventually became the founder and president of Georgia State College (now Savannah State University) and the founder of two Philadelphia banks.

Mike Werner, JCB’s vice president of operations, learned of the Risers Academy through his association with the Savannah School Board’s Educational Fund Committee. This particular committee provides monetary grants to worthy school projects, and Hubert Middle School submitted the Risers Academy as a project for consideration. “Our committee was intrigued by the Risers Academy’s mission, and as a result, I got the chance to visit the school and see what the program is all about,” Werner said. “I left very impressed by the Risers Academy and how it teaches these young men that with hard work and discipline, there’s no limit to what they can achieve.”

Werner invited the Risers Academy to JCB’s North American Headquarters, giving the group an insider’s view into the heavy equipment manufacturer’s daily operations. The boys toured the facility, enjoyed lunch on site, participated in product demonstrations and learned about the importance of branding—not just for businesses and their products, but also on a personal level.

“We discussed how companies like Nike, BMW and McDonald’s, for example, all have logos that evoke certain perceptions from us when we see them,” Werner explained. “Because the Risers Academy has its own logo, I asked the group what that logo meant to them.”

The boys responded with the words “brotherhood,” “focus” and “discipline.” From there, Werner was able to help them understand how the members of the Risers Academy have in essence created their own brand. “I told them that your logo is part of your brand, as is your uniform,” Werner said. “But most importantly, we talked about how the behavior of each and every one of the boys is a part of the Risers Academy’s brand as well. In that way, they came to understand our actions have a profound impact on how we’re perceived.”

Following the branding presentation, the group met JCB employees who have taken distinct paths to their own personal definitions of success, coming from disadvantaged backgrounds or other hardships to achieve high levels of education and career achievement.

“I hope that the time these young men spent at JCB reinforced their dedication to staying the course,” Werner said. “The day’s message was that the process of learning and growing as a person never stops, but it’s up to each of us to keep pushing ourselves and make the most of our opportunities.”

World's Best Selling Backhoe Loader Gets Even Better

JCB’s world leading range of backhoe loaders today moves further ahead of the competition with the unveiling of a new generation of machines which offer customers more versatility, productivity, cost efficiency and comfort.

JCB’s proven past in backhoe loaders stretches back to 1953 when the company first pioneered the machine. Over those six decades the company has pushed the boundaries in backhoe development and now two in every five of these machines sold anywhere in the world are made by JCB.

At Bauma the wraps came off the most efficient JCB backhoe loader ever, offering customers average fuel savings ranging from six to 16% at typical daily work rates, largely achieved through the introduction of a new EcoDig system incorporating three hydraulic pumps.

Users will be hit immediately by the striking new design of the machine, which exudes ruggedness and strength thanks to a re-styled counterweight and new vertical grille design offering an even more aggressive feel.  The sharper lines on the excavator and loader profiles contribute to the robust look, while the sloping hood retains excellent forward visibility.

In addition, the machines benefit from a host of new features including:

  • Improved cab for greater comfort
  • Power brakes providing proportional braking and fuel economy improvements

Optional features:

  • New heated front windshield – an industry first for backhoe loaders
  • An in-cab hot beverage machine
  • Combined hammer and bi-directional circuit for excellent versatility in attachment use

Increased Productivity

The biggest changes are under the skin. A new EcoDig hydraulic system now utilizes three hydraulic pumps to provide the same hydraulic output but at lower engine speeds, itself delivering average fuel savings of up to 15 per cent. Operators are able to select from two working modes, either Eco mode or low flow, to optimise productivity and improve machine control.

A secondary benefit of the three pump design is faster performance of the extradig extending dipper stick, further boosting productivity. The new hydraulic system and lower engine speeds also contribute to a cut in exhaust emissions and a reduction in overall machine noise levels, both inside the cab and externally.

The new backhoes come with the existing EcoRoad options of Smooth Ride System (SRS) and TorqueLock to help boost productivity further. TorqueLock reduces fuel consumption by up to 25% while increasing speed by up to 10 % and the Smooth Ride System maximizes load retention around the job site for increased productivity and operator comfort.

Power brakes are to be introduced on both 3CX and 4CX models. The system provides proportional braking throughout the pedal travel, providing operators with improved braking and reduced effort.

JCB has also redesigned the pedal position in the backhoe loader cab, with an automotive style position which improves ergonomics. The power brake design ensures that there is full brake pad release when the driver comes off the pedal. This enables operators to better maintain roading speeds and contributes to a further one per cent saving in fuel consumption.

By using the machine’s hydraulic system to supply oil for the power brakes, there is no requirement for separate brake reservoirs. This simplifies service and reduces the number of daily checks for the operator.

JCB’s EcoLoad package of options add to the enhanced productivity. The return-to-dig feature automatically resets the shovel to dig position, saving time and effort; the transmission disconnect diverts hydraulic power to the loader for faster lifting. In addition, high engine torque at low revs provides excellent pushing and hill climbing performance and limited slip differentials (LSD) provide extra traction in challenging conditions.

A new design and a new cab

The best-selling 3CX and 4CX ranges benefit from a striking redesign, incorporating sharper lines in the counterweight, grille and hood, and making best use of JCB’s bold new machine branding. The cab adopts a similar style to the JCB Fastrac, with improved run-off channels to prevent rain water collecting on the roof. The machines also benefit from independently adjustable working lights at the front and rear of the roof, providing improved visibility all around the working area in poor light conditions.

The cab is refreshed internally too, with a move to a black interior in the lower half of the cab, including the seat, which has new material to provide increased comfort and less wear. The pillars and roof lining adopt a lighter grey color, making the cab feel even more light and spacious.

JCB engineers looked for innovation in every detail in the cab, and have found a new material to cover the redesigned steering wheel, offering improved grip for the driver. The backhoes also benefit from new high quality switches, activating consoles which provide excellent light definition. The high quality switches have laser etched images that are clearly backlit, enabling clear visibility of switches at night.

JCB will be taking a lead from the automotive industry with the option of an innovative automatic heated front windshield on all 3CX and 4CX models later this year. Available in time for winter 2010, the heated windshield rapidly clears ice and misting in cold conditions, allowing the operator to get to work without delay in the morning.

Attachment Availability

A new combined hammer and bidirectional auxiliary circuit makes the fitting of attachment power circuits easier. The circuit has been designed to provide low flow and high flow across all 3CX and 4CX models, including all fixed and extending dipper variants. This greatly increases versatility for the customer as the machines are compatible with an increased number of optional attachments.

There is also the option of a new 29ft hose reel on the Hand Held Tool Circuit, that allows contractors to use hydraulic power tools alongside the backhoe loader, removing the need for separate power packs.

Taking A Break

JCB has always been at the forefront of backhoe loader design and production, leading the world in innovation and machine performance. Yet sometimes it is the small things that matter most to the operator.

In the 1970’s JCB took the time to think of the operator first, supplying a kettle as an option with each machine so that the driver could make a hot drink even when away from the site facilities.

Now JCB is to revive this link with the past. All 3CX and 4CX models will be available with an optional hot beverage machine, capable of producing tea or coffee, that will lock securely into an area at the side of the cab. The machine uses the 12V supply directly from the machine and has been designed to fit into the existing cab layout.

The backhoe then will travel more than 3,000 miles across the U.S., making fundraising “pit stops” at JCB dealerships in nine cities along the way, before reaching its final destination – the beach at California’s Santa Monica Pier – on April 20, 2010.

“Haiti’s road to recovery will be long and difficult,” said John Patterson, chairman and CEO, JCB Inc. “On behalf of everyone at JCB, we hope that the miles traveled and donations secured during Backhoe Across America will help ease the burden of the journey that lies ahead for this devastated nation.”

Not surprisingly, Neil dreamed of operating JCB’s signature bright yellow machines – but he had no way of knowing that the family-owned manufacturer would play a major role in his life for many years to come.

Now in his 37th year with JCB, Neil will operate the 3CX machine from start to finish, traveling at speeds up to 30 mph on secondary roads, which, by law, must be used throughout the trek due to the backhoe’s maximum speed limitations.

Massive Investment Results In Industry's Cleanest Engine

JCB has made one of the biggest investments in its history to develop the off-highway sector’s cleanest engine in readiness for incoming emissions legislation.

The company has invested around $140 million in researching and developing a new combustion system for the new JCB Ecomax T4 4.4 liter engine – the latest generation of JCB Dieselmax engine. The investment has delivered an industry-first solution which eliminates the need for any exhaust after-treatment and delivers cost savings for mid-range customers.

The engine is now undergoing full in-field testing before going into production in 2012 to meet Tier 4 interim/Stage 3B legislation.

The keys benefits of the innovation are:

  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Reduced cost of ownership
  • Better reliability
  • Better packaging and no compromise of machine design

Alan Tolley, JCB’s Director of Engine Programmes, said: “Meeting Tier 4 emissions legislation is a massive challenge but also a huge opportunity for innovation; an opportunity to come up with a solution that has real advantages for our customers. We believe the result is not only the off highway sector’s cleanest engine, but a first for our industry.

“The expectation for the first part of Tier 4 interim/Stage 3B legislation was that to achieve these really low particulate levels you needed to fit a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

“But when you look at that technology for our particular part of the market, namely mid-range construction equipment, we see there are some real disadvantages with that solution, in particular increased fuel consumption through increased back pressure to the engine. Also, in many applications load cycles are light and the DPF doesn’t self regenerate so you have to force it to do so and it needs fuel to do it.

“Our strategy therefore has been to meet Tier 4 interim emission standards without a DPF but also to achieve this without any exhaust after-treatment. We have focussed our research and development efforts on a high efficiency combustion system; in other words we have made sure we don’t create the pollutants to start with rather than try and deal with them later. This approach also gives us very low fuel consumption levels.

“The solution we have come up with gives significant advantages for our customers for packaging and integration. On machines there is not much spare room in the engine compartment and we had a lot of discussion about how to optimise the machines, their design and functionality. The risk with something like Tier 4 is that in order to package everything you have to compromise those elements and we were not willing to do that which is what drove us to pursue a different technology solution.

“One of the advantages we have as a company that makes machines and engines is that we can come up with a final machine product which is better optimised.

“The real end user benefits come in the shape of reduced cost of ownership and reduced fuel consumption and better reliability. We see DPFs as a significant reliability risk; that has certainly been the experience in the automotive sector. We knew the emissions limits were very challenging but we always had the belief and objective of achieving it without putting the onerous burden on our customers.”

Better by design
Since its launch in 2004 the JCB Dieselmax engine, which powered the JCB Dieselmax car to a world diesel landspeed record of 350mph on the Salts Flats in Bonneville, Utah, in 2006, has undergone continual development. More than 100,000 engines are now working in the field globally, recording class-leading levels of performance and reliability. The latest developments will see the Dieselmax engines cleanly past the Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim legislation that will come into effect for engines of this size in 2012.

As many engines within the 129kW (75-175hp) range are used in plant and equipment that is operated under variable light loads, there can be concerns about Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration, with the engine management system having to force the regeneration process by burning additional fuel. This is not only inefficient but can result in additional service requirements, substantial cost increases and the risk of damage to the DPF if a contractor uses a high sulphur fuel.

To achieve the next round of emissions regulations, JCB Power Systems has worked closely with research and development specialist Ricardo, using computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and a Ricardo designed combustion bowl to perfect the combustion process.

With second-generation common rail fuel injection technology, injection pressures have been raised to 29,000 psi and nozzle hole geometry has been refined to provide highly effective atomisation and distribution of the fuel within the cylinder. JCB has incorporated variable geometry turbochargers on all but the lowest powered 74 hp Dieselmax engine, which falls under a slightly different emission regulation. Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is also used to clean up the exhaust gases before they are passed from the engine. This means that there is no requirement for any exhaust after-treatment components to meet these emissions levels on the 4.4 litre JCB Ecomax T4 engine.

The company has worked with fuel system and electronics specialist Delphi to develop an electronic control system with a form of learning capacity, that will ensure that the engine stays within its intended parameters even as the components settle throughout their design life.

Benefit to the Customer
As well as there being no need to fit a costly exhaust after-treatment system, there has been no requirement to increase the cooling pack size or to reduce service intervals from their standard 500 hours. In addition, under test conditions, the engines have been achieving a 5-10 percent fuel consumption improvement compared to the previous generation.

The engine design is also future-proofed, as the structural architecture, the componentry and systems will remain the same for Stage 4/Tier 4 Final regulations in the future, at which time exhaust after-treatment for NOx reduction may be unavoidable.

Investment In The Future
JCB has invested heavily in its Power Systems business in the UK, to meet the requirements of its customers and legislators. The original 4.4 litre Dieselmax 444 engine has been joined by a 4.8 litre Dieselmax 448 version, while power ratings have been extended at both ends of the scale.

The latest investment sees the opening of one of the most sophisticated engine test cells currently in operation in the UK. JCB Power Systems has built 10 test cells, and will initially operate six cells. Each cell is capable of carrying out the full EU transient test cycle that is required to meet Stage IIIB and Tier 4 Interim legislation and the cells can handle engines with up to 400hp of power output, leaving room for further expansion in the future.

To meet this increase in workload, JCB Power Systems has increased its research and development team by 40 percent, investing further in the JCB Dieselmax range.

This continual investment in technology, research and development of the JCB Dieselmax engine line will ensure that JCB stays at the forefront of diesel engine technology. JCB Power Systems will continue to provide customers around the world with low fuel consumption emissions compliant powertrains, without unnecessary expense or complex exhaust after-treatment.

JCB Launches New 515-40 Compact Telescopic Handler

Newest and most compact telehandler offers maneuverability, lifting height and power for smaller worksites

Leading heavy equipment manufacturer JCB is launching the most compact and maneuverable telescopic handler model the company has produced to date. This machine, the new JCB 515-40, is the result of an innovative design that keeps the machine’s overall height under six feet, making it perfect for use in more confined areas.

Small but mighty, the 515-40  is just 5’ 11” tall, 5’ 2” wide and 9’ 6” long and weighs 7,672 lbs. To achieve the lowest possible overall height, JCB challenged conventional design concepts and developed the 515-40 with an all-new, innovative, off-set single-spine main frame. As a result, the machine boasts a full-size cab with both easy accessibility and plenty of space for the operator. The new design enables the machine to break through a barrier that previously prevented many compact telescopic handlers from use in smaller workspaces. According to Chris Giorgianni, general manager of product marketing at JCB North America’s headquarters in Savannah, Ga., the extremely compact 515-40 can be effectively used at sites that could previously only be accessed by skid steer loaders.
