JCB WINS MAJOR ORDER FROM SWEDISH MILITARY FOR HIGH-SPEED MACHINES

JCB has won a multi-million dollar order for its Savannah built high-speed military backhoe from the Swedish Army.

The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (“FMV”) is procuring on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces 10 High Mobility Engineer Excavators (HMEEs), which will be delivered by the end of next year in readiness to go into service in 2012. The units are currently in production at JCB’s Savannah facility.

The deal signals another major success for the unique machine which went into production at JCB’s Savannah factory when, in 2005, the company won its largest ever military order  – worth a total of $230 million  – for up to 800 HMEEs from the United States Army.

John Patterson, Chairman and CEO of JCB Inc. says: “The HMEE is already in use for a number of armed forces around the world, including those in the US and the UK, so we’re delighted to have won another substantial order for this unique machine, which is exclusively manufactured here in Savannah. A number of other nations are also expressing strong interest in the HMEE so we are confident we will win more business in the future.”

In 2008, the British Army placed a $10.5 million order for HMEEs, which are now in service in Afghanistan.

Full production of HMEEs began in 2007 at JCB Inc in Savannah, Georgia. The machine combines the capabilities of the world-renowned JCB backhoe loader and the innovative high-speed JCB Fastrac agricultural tractor, which is the only tractor to have full suspension and anti-lock brakes. The objective of the HMEE concept is to have a machine capable of traveling at military convoy speed without the need for transportation by a truck and low-loader trailer. The top speed of the HMEE is 60mph (88kph).

The 17.5-ton machine has a 6.7- liter diesel engine, four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer, lift more than two tons and dig to a depth of almost thirteen feet. It is designed to be air-transportable by Hercules C-130 aircraft. Added to this, a theater proven crew protection package makes the HMEE a new force within military engineering.

Over almost 30 years, JCB has supplied 45 different military organizations across the world with more than 3400 JCB machines.

JCB LAUNCHES NEW GENERATION SKID STEERS AND TRACK LOADERS

First JCB products to be designed, engineered and manufactured in North America

SAVANNAH, GA. (November 8, 2010)—JCB, one of the world’s largest heavy equipment manufacturers, has launched an exciting new line of highly productive and reliable skid steer loaders and compact track loaders. These “New Generation” machines are the first to not only be manufactured but also designed and engineered at the company’s North American headquarters in Savannah, Ga.

John Patterson Deputy Chairman of JCB said: “North America generates 60 percent of the worldwide demand for skid steers and compact track loaders, so developing and producing the new generation of machines in Savannah makes perfect sense and has enabled us not only to meet the unique needs of the North American market but also develop a machine range that will have universal appeal.”

Today, JCB introduces a range of seven new skid steers- four wheeled and three tracked- in a range that will eventually grow to 18 models. All seven machines introduced today are vertical lift, which allows for increased capacity and more reach at maximum lift height. The models now available—the 260, 280, 300 and 330 wheeled skid steers and 260T, 300T, 320T compact track loaders—are large platform machines with rated operating capacities (ROC) of 2,600 lbs and above. With the introduction of the New Generation machines, JCB will be able to offer a complete range of wheeled and tracked machines, both radial and vertical lift, ranging from 1300lbs- 3500lbs.

The new generation machines benefit from a number of new features, including:

  • A tilting cab with increased service access
  • Multifunction joysticks
  • A hydraulic quick hitch
  • Isolated cab that is sealed and pressurized with reduced noise levels
  • Heated air-suspension seat with adjustable armrests
  • O-ring face seals for all hydraulic connections
  • A new range of more than 30 types of JCB attachments.

By combining JCB’s history of innovation with a number of additional enhancements, the New Generation machines offer an even wider range of benefits than the company’s previous skid steer and compact track loader product line:

o   Best-in-class visibility. The new vertical lift machines showcase JCB’s unique “PowerBoom” design, which uses a single arm, rather than the conventional two arm skid steer design. The JCB models do not require a torque tube across the back of the machine. Thus, operators can enjoy an unobstructed rear view and better all around visibility for unmatched job site safety and driver confidence. To further enhance visibility JCB has eliminated the mesh screen on the cab machines and replaced it with laminated glass.

o   Best-in-class serviceability. With O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings and a simplified design resulting in 38 percent fewer parts, JCB’s new machines are even easier to service.  A new tilting cab design gives technicians improved access to the machine’s power train and hydraulic components. The new models also feature a rear service door for easy access to the engine and daily checkpoints, a top-opening hood for radiator access and a hinged radiator for improved engine access.

o   Outstanding operator comfort. The new generation machines have a larger entry door and a 17% larger cab than previous models. JCB has also introduced multifunction joystick controls and an optional heated air-suspension seat with adjustable armrests, making JCB’s skid steers incredibly comfortable to operate. Redesigned control panels have been relocated from the lower console to the panels at the top of the cab to be within the operator’s line of sight. Other available creature comforts include cup holders, MP3 player compartment with charging outlet and auxiliary plug, optional stereo package and an electronic throttle.  Operators will also enjoy a quieter cab with noise levels at a very low 76dBa, an 85% improvement.

o   Versatility and performance. Switching to any of the machine’s impressive 30 attachment families is a snap thanks to a standard universal mechanical hitch or an optional hydraulic quick hitch.  Parallel lift and 2-speeds make it easy to maneuver around the job site and complete more tasks in less time, and with the introduction of an optional Smooth Ride System (SRS) transporting materials over rough terrain has been made easier.

o   Unmatched safety. As in previous models, the New Generation skid steers and compact track loaders feature a unique left side entry door that allows the operator to enter and exit the machine clear of the attachment and loader arm, making it the industry’s safest skid steer.

o   Exceptional value. Owning a JCB skid steer or tracked loader costs less due to increased productivity and serviceability. Overall fuel consumption has been reduced 15% equating to an estimated annual savings of more than $3,000 versus competitive machines (based on an off-road diesel price of $2.90).

JCB MACHINES PLAY ROLE IN CHILEAN MINE RESCUE DRAMA

Machines made by JCB played their own small part in the Chilean mine workers’ rescue drama.

A fleet of around 10 JCB products operate at the San Jose copper and gold mine in Chile’s Atacama desert, where 33 miners were trapped more than 2,000 feet underground for 69 days when part of the pit collapsed on 5 August.

In the minutes leading up to the successful rescue mission which started last Tuesday, a JCB 531-70 Loadall telescopic handler – made at the company’s World HQ in Rocester – arrived at the rescue shaft to deliver, on a set of forks, the capsule which brought the miners back to safety. Another JCB Loadall telescopic handler played an equally starring role below ground while the miners were trapped. Millions saw them using a 531-70 Loadall for a dual purpose – a method of getting around the mine and for sleeping in.

Carlos Hernández, JCB’s Regional Director for Latin America & Caribbean, said: “There’s obviously huge relief throughout Chile and the rest of world that all the miners were brought out safely after such a long ordeal.

“JCB’s products were used on a daily basis for a variety of tasks at the mine and we are delighted they played a very small role in what was one of the most amazing rescue stories of our time.

”The mine also uses JCB 436 and 456 wheeled loading shovel models made in Cheadle, a JCB 533-105 Loadall telescopic handler, a JCB JS200 tracked excavator made in Uttoxeter, a JCB 3C backhoe made in Brazil and a JCB VM115 roller made by JCB in Germany. The machines belong to JCB customers Pedro del Real and Zublin and were supplied by JCB’s Chilean dealer Derco.

JCB PLEDGES $250,000 WORTH OF SUPPORT FOR PAKISTANI FLOOD VICTIMS

JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford today pledged assistance worth $250,000 to help in the reconstruction effort in the wake of the devastating floods in Pakistan.

He is donating two high specification 4CX backhoe loaders with attachments to the stricken country where the worst floods in decades have left millions people homeless and where rebuilding costs are expected to be in the region of $17 billion.

JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford is giving assistance worth $250,000, including two 4CX backhoe loaders, to help in the reconstruction of Pakistan in the wake of the devastating floods.

Sir Anthony said: “Britain has been leading the way with the level of its donations to Pakistan and as a British manufacturer I am keen for us to help in any way possible and hope that JCB’s donation of machines can assist in some small way.”

It is not the first time that JCB has helped Pakistan in times of natural disaster. After the 2005 earthquake the company donated excavators to help in the clean up operation.

Earlier this year JCB donated equipment to help the disaster relief effort in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that killed around 220,000 people. This was followed by assistance worth $100,000 to help in the rebuilding efforts in the wake of the Chilean earthquake disaster. Sir Anthony donated a 3C backhoe loader complete with attachments and spare parts to help with reconstruction efforts in the country’s second city Concepcion which was hit by an 8.8-magnitude quake, killing more than 700 people.

The contribution to the aid effort follows a series of other JCB machinery donations in recent years to other parts of the world hit by natural disasters, including the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province in China, when six backhoe loaders worth over $600,000 and a team of operators were sent from the company’s factory in Shanghai to help the clear-up effort in the region.  JCB also donated machines to help in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami in 2004.

JCB Dealer Websites Go Mobile

JCB has launched new smartphone-friendly mobile websites for all dealers participating in the JCB Dealer Website Program. The new mobile sites are designed to provide an optimal browsing experience and easy site navigation for on-the-go customers- a first in the construction equipment industry.

The mobile websites can automatically detect if a visitor is using a mobile device and seamlessly adjust the content format to fit smartphones including the iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid and EVO. Mobile customers are now able to search for inventory, promotions, store hours, and directions to the dealership as well as submit contact information directly through the mobile web site.

Tracy Clark, vice president of JCB of Milwaukee says, “We are thrilled to have this new mobile capability. This site is an awesome tool for our salesmen. Now they have access to information anytime, anywhere without having to get onto a laptop or notebook.”

JCB has worked with Equipment Web Services, a division of Dominion Enterprises headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, to develop the sites.

“We are excited to provide this new technology to the JCB Dealer Website Program,” says Jennie Davis, OEM relationship manager for Equipment Web Services. “The mobile web sites will not only increase JCB’s ever-growing footprint in North America, but will also ultimately provide yet another avenue of additional revenue for JCB website program dealers.”

With more than 30 dealers enrolled in the program, it will now be even easier for customers and prospects to interact with their JCB dealers.

Excavator Production Underway at JCB’s Latest Factory

JCB is continuing its investment in global excavator production capability with the opening of its newest factory in Brazil where the first 20 tonne machine has just rolled off the line.

The JS200LC tracked excavator has been bought by Jorcal Engenharia E Construções S/A, a company based in Sao Paulo State, and owner Renato Rédis says he is “extremely pleased” with the performance of the machine.

The sale of the first Brazilian-made tracked excavator follows an investment in the new production facility next to the JCB’s existing backhoe loader factory in the city of Sorocaba.

The investment in the facility in Brazil follows the opening of a new £40 million tracked and wheeled excavator factory in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, UK.

The ceremony to mark the production of the first excavator in Brazil was attended by Vitor Lippi, the Mayor of Sorocaba, David Bell, JCB’s Chief Corporate Development Officer and Carlos Hernández, Regional Director JCB in Latin America.

Carlos Hernández said: “The Latin American region is undergoing strong growth this year and our decision to constantly invest in the expansion of production capability will help us achieve our objective of maintaining business growth and increasing our market share in the region.”

The construction of the new Brazilian excavator factory took just seven months and includes a new training area to enhance the service back up provided to excavator customers in the region. JCB has also recently doubled its backhoe loader production capacity in Brazil to help meet demand for machines in the region.

Epic Road Trip Earns World Record for JCB

The JCB 3CX backhoe loader has completed a 26-day, 3,185-mile coast-to-coast fundraising “road trip”, earning the company a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The road trip smashed the existing record for The Longest Journey in an Excavator, which stood at 2,485 miles.

Neil Smith, a 35-year veteran with JCB, and the Backhoe Across America crew began their coast-to-coast trek from the beach at Tybee Island, GA, on Friday, March 26, 2010.  Carrying a bucket of sand from the east coast, the backhoe traveled more than 3,100 miles across the U.S., before dropping the sand in Santa Monica California on April 20th. Along the way, the crew made fundraising “pit stops” at JCB dealerships in eight cities to help raise awareness and funds for the Haiti Relief and Development effort through the Red Cross.

The trip was made in the newly updated 2010 JCB 3CX backhoe, putting the machine’s endurance to the ultimate test. The entire 3,185 mile trip was completed with out any unscheduled service stops. The new EcoRoad feature gave the team 30% fuel savings for the duration of the journey.

“The JCB backhoe performed brilliantly! We didn’t have one problem from start to finish,” says Smith.

Although the trip was completed on April 20th on the beach at the Santa Monica Pier, the journey is far from over. The campaign will run through July as JCB aims to raise $1 million for the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund. JCB Fields a Squad for World Cup Duties in South Africa

A squad of nine JCB Teletruk forklifts is playing a key role in preparing major stadiums that are hosting games during the 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa.

The JCB Teletruks have been called up for general material handling duties during the final construction and fit-out stages of hospitality suites and visitor facilities in and around the six principal World Cup venues in time to welcome thousands of fans from around the world later this week.

All of the Teletruks have been supplied by Clarklift South Africa (PTY) Ltd., the JCB Industrial dealer in South Africa.

Two of the JCB Teletruks, manufactured by JCB Utility Products in the UK, have been deployed at Soccer City, Johannesburg – the main 94,000- capacity World Cup stadium that will stage the opening games as well as the 2010 World Cup Final.

There are also two machines working at the Durban Stadium and at Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium, while there is one machine on each site at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, Free State Stadium at Bloemfontein and Peter Mokaba Stadium at Polokwane.

World's Best Selling Backhoe Loader Gets Even Better

JCB’s world leading range of backhoe loaders today moves further ahead of the competition with the unveiling of a new generation of machines which offer customers more versatility, productivity, cost efficiency and comfort.

JCB’s proven past in backhoe loaders stretches back to 1953 when the company first pioneered the machine. Over those six decades the company has pushed the boundaries in backhoe development and now two in every five of these machines sold anywhere in the world are made by JCB.

At Bauma the wraps came off the most efficient JCB backhoe loader ever, offering customers average fuel savings ranging from six to 16% at typical daily work rates, largely achieved through the introduction of a new EcoDig system incorporating three hydraulic pumps.

Users will be hit immediately by the striking new design of the machine, which exudes ruggedness and strength thanks to a re-styled counterweight and new vertical grille design offering an even more aggressive feel.  The sharper lines on the excavator and loader profiles contribute to the robust look, while the sloping hood retains excellent forward visibility.

In addition, the machines benefit from a host of new features including:

  • Improved cab for greater comfort
  • Power brakes providing proportional braking and fuel economy improvements

Optional features:

  • New heated front windshield – an industry first for backhoe loaders
  • An in-cab hot beverage machine
  • Combined hammer and bi-directional circuit for excellent versatility in attachment use
  • A nine metre factory-fitted hose reel for improved productivity and versatility

Increased Productivity

The biggest changes are under the skin. A new EcoDig hydraulic system now utilizes three hydraulic pumps to provide the same hydraulic output but at lower engine speeds, itself delivering average fuel savings of up to 15 per cent. Operators are able to select from two working modes, either Eco mode or low flow, to optimise productivity and improve machine control.

A secondary benefit of the three pump design is faster performance of the extradig extending dipper stick, further boosting productivity. The new hydraulic system and lower engine speeds also contribute to a cut in exhaust emissions and a reduction in overall machine noise levels, both inside the cab and externally.

The new backhoes come with the existing EcoRoad options of Smooth Ride System (SRS) and TorqueLock to help boost productivity further. TorqueLock reduces fuel consumption by up to 25% while increasing speed by up to 10 % and the Smooth Ride System maximizes load retention around the job site for increased productivity and operator comfort.

Power brakes are to be introduced on both 3CX and 4CX models. The system provides proportional braking throughout the pedal travel, providing operators with improved braking and reduced effort.

JCB has also redesigned the pedal position in the backhoe loader cab, with an automotive style position which improves ergonomics. The power brake design ensures that there is full brake pad release when the driver comes off the pedal. This enables operators to better maintain roading speeds and contributes to a further one per cent saving in fuel consumption.

By using the machine’s hydraulic system to supply oil for the power brakes, there is no requirement for separate brake reservoirs. This simplifies service and reduces the number of daily checks for the operator.

JCB’s EcoLoad package of options add to the enhanced productivity. The return-to-dig feature automatically resets the shovel to dig position, saving time and effort; the transmission disconnect diverts hydraulic power to the loader for faster lifting. In addition, high engine torque at low revs provides excellent pushing and hill climbing performance and limited slip differentials (LSD) provide extra traction in challenging conditions.

A new design and a new cab

The best-selling 3CX and 4CX ranges benefit from a striking redesign, incorporating sharper lines in the counterweight, grille and hood, and making best use of JCB’s bold new machine branding. The cab adopts a similar style to the JCB Fastrac, with improved run-off channels to prevent rain water collecting on the roof. The machines also benefit from independently adjustable working lights at the front and rear of the roof, providing improved visibility all around the working area in poor light conditions.

The cab is refreshed internally too, with a move to a black interior in the lower half of the cab, including the seat, which has new material to provide increased comfort and less wear. The pillars and roof lining adopt a lighter grey color, making the cab feel even more light and spacious.

JCB engineers looked for innovation in every detail in the cab, and have found a new material to cover the redesigned steering wheel, offering improved grip for the driver. The backhoes also benefit from new high quality switches, activating consoles which provide excellent light definition. The high quality switches have laser etched images that are clearly backlit, enabling clear visibility of switches at night.

JCB will be taking a lead from the automotive industry with the option of an innovative automatic heated front windshield on all 3CX and 4CX models later this year. Available in time for winter 2010, the heated windshield rapidly clears ice and misting in cold conditions, allowing the operator to get to work without delay in the morning.

Attachment Availability

A new combined hammer and bidirectional auxiliary circuit makes the fitting of attachment power circuits easier. The circuit has been designed to provide low flow and high flow across all 3CX and 4CX models, including all fixed and extending dipper variants. This greatly increases versatility for the customer as the machines are compatible with an increased number of optional attachments.

There is also the option of a new 29ft hose reel on the Hand Held Tool Circuit, that allows contractors to use hydraulic power tools alongside the backhoe loader, removing the need for separate power packs.

Taking A Break

JCB has always been at the forefront of backhoe loader design and production, leading the world in innovation and machine performance. Yet sometimes it is the small things that matter most to the operator.

In the 1970’s JCB took the time to think of the operator first, supplying a kettle as an option with each machine so that the driver could make a hot drink even when away from the site facilities.

Now JCB is to revive this link with the past. All 3CX and 4CX models will be available with an optional hot beverage machine, capable of producing tea or coffee, that will lock securely into an area at the side of the cab. The machine uses the 12V supply directly from the machine and has been designed to fit into the existing cab layout.
